How to Shop Wallpaper by Room: Hallways

It is important to consider which types of wallpaper would be suitable for different rooms in your home. There are lots of different types of wallpaper, and some types are more suitable for certain rooms than others. This blog series will provide information on one area of a house per week, giving you tips and inspiration for the given room.

This week, we will focus on hallways. Of course, the wallpaper that you choose for your hallway is entirely up to you, but some may be more suitable for this space than others.

Hallways typically have a high volume of traffic, as lots of people will be walking past it daily. Therefore, it is wise to have washable wallpaper with a hard-wearing material to withstand everyday wear and tear.

Washability:

Did you know that wallpaper has four different types of washability? Look out for the following symbols when buying new wallpaper, as it will indicate how washable the wallpaper is, i.e. how much it can withstand being cleaned and with what materials. Below is a guide showing the 4 symbols and what they mean.

Spongeable

This is the lowest washability ranking as far as wallpapers go. It means that to wash the wallpaper, you can only lightly dap it with a slightly damp sponge.      

Washable

These wallpapers are more resistant to stains and can be regularly wiped down with a damp cloth.

Extra Washable

This means that you can apply a little more pressure when washing your wallpaper without it ripping or getting damaged.

Scrubbable

This is the highest ranking washability for wallpaper, and this means that the wallpaper can be scrubbed with a brush and have detergent applied to it.

For a hallway, it would be best to at least go for a washable wallpaper, but ideally, you should choose one that is extra washable or scrubbable. This is because these types of wallpaper are generally more hard-wearing and you will also be able to wash marks off of it easily.

Type of Material: 

Wallpapers are also made from different materials, all with a varying level of durability. Look out for the following materials when choosing wallpaper for your hallway as they tend to be the most long-lasting and durable.

Expanded Vinyl Wallpaper:

This type of wallpaper has a layer of paper with an expanded, often multi-coloured, 3D overprint of dye paste. They are typically easier to hang and are suited to walls that need to withstand more wear and tear than usual.

Vinyl Wallpapers:

These consist of paper that has been embossed under heat after printng, produing an attractive surface look. They are also ideal for walls that are going to be passed through more often than other rooms in your home.
